CORBELS
The corbels at the Upper North Level of Romsey Abbey are arranged in 15 tables with a total of 112 corbels.
Many of the corbels on the north face have been disfigured with a dark discolouration caused by a sulphite build-up, often referred to as clinkers, this has resulted from years of pollution.
This type of three headed depiction is referred to as a 'Janus' head from Roman mythology, a guardian of doorways and gates. it can see the past, the present and the future, hence the first month of the gregorian calendar is called January. click on the following link for more details - see pages 58-59
