Corbels - Faces
These are some of the many carved faces of corbels to be seen around the exterior of Romsey Abbey.
Some are of real people, most unknown, some mythical and a few cartoonish.
The first is of mason 'Peter' Wheble from Beck and Vokes, Winchester.

In the absence of any known protocols to identify locations on the exterior of churches, the above plans were created for the corbels to show where the various carved tables were located.
Please note however that a totally different and more accurate method using a grid-plan was subsequently adopted to identify positions when the Abbey inventory project was undertaken.
